First Generation 1938
![]() Bruce Bauer Bruce Bauer opened his company in Medford, Oregon in 1938. After doing some building in the San Mateo County area in 1946, he saw the need for a lumber yard and opened his second store in San Carlos, CA. |
1945
![]() Medford, Oregon 1945 Originally opened as a contractor lumber yard, over the years we developed into a do-it-yourself home center with strong emphasis on practical advice to home owners while offering quality merchandise and top of the line customer service. |
Second Generation 1966
![]() Don Thom Don Thom bought the lumber yard from his father-in-law, Bruce Bauer in 1966. In 1971, he bought out Bickell Brothers Lumber at San Antonio Circle in Mountain View. A family owned business, Don Thom had two of his sons, David and Darryl, working with him. They had to learn from the bottom up and became familiar with all phases of building including home construction. |

1991
![]() San Carlos, CA 1991 Bruce Bauer then expanded its inventory to include basic plumbing and electrical supplies, to round out its home improvement materials and services inventory. Bruce Bauer also has a senior citizen discount program. |
Third Generation 1991
![]() David and Darryl Thom Don Thom retired in 1989 and the business was passed on to Darryl and David. In 1991, the San Carlos store was forced to close due to railroad expansion. In 1993, an award winning Anderson Window Showroom was added to the Mountain View location. |
2001

This enables us to recognize change in the marketplace and react quickly, for example the demand for “Green Products” as well as affordable products in a slow economy. |

Our customers understand and appreciate the value of quality products and the added value of our outstanding customer services.” Both of Darryl’s sons, Brian and Joel worked at the store throughout their high school years and are now studying business. |
